Have you ever taught a pupil who seems perfectly capable of completing their work, but spends half the lesson finding ways to avoid getting started?

It's easy to interpret this behaviour as laziness, defiance or a lack of motivation. But sometimes, avoidance is a way of escaping discomfort or stress caused by underlying needs. And if we misunderstand what's driving that behaviour, our attempts to motivate the pupil might actually make things worse.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • Why avoiding a difficult task can bring temporary relief, making avoidance more likely in the future.
  • How to distinguish between manageable discomfort, which helps children grow, and overwhelming distress.
  • How the PAIN Framework can help you identify hidden stressors behind apparently unmotivated behaviour.
  • Practical ways to reduce unnecessary barriers, build confidence and help reluctant pupils engage without lowering expectations.

You'll also hear why not all avoidance is emotionally driven, and why understanding the difference matters when choosing how to respond.
